The Texas Education Agency appears to be on the cusp of taking over Houston ISD. The school at the center of the fight, Wheatley High, has loyal students.

Harold Dutton has argued that HISD is set up so that students in northeast Houston have to leave their neighborhoods to get a good education. And clearly many families agree but it isn’t true that all those who remain at Wheatley are stuck.

Even after her family moved away from their Liberty Road home in the neighborhood, McCullum chose to transfer to Wheatley, where she had friends and even knew some of the teachers. She threw herself into everything the campus had to offer and this week learned that her hard work paid off when she got a scholarship to her dream school, theSabrina Cuby-King, principal of Wheatley High School, stands outside the school during dismissal on March, 10, 2023 in Houston, Texas.

Now, she is one of those adults, volunteering and coaching at the school in addition to starting her own nonprofit. She knows what those relationships can do firsthand. If it weren't for those teachers, she said, she wouldn’t have gone on to get her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
