Parents are on edge after Uvalde, and for good reason. Nothing substantively has changed...

It was chaos at Jefferson High School Tuesday after parents swarmed upon the campus following false reports of shots fired. The false alarm reflects the need for gun safety reforms and a loss of trust in law enforcement post-Uvalde.SAN ANTONIO — May 24 is burned in the hearts and minds of many parents. May 24 is the day 19 children and two teachers were murdered in Uvalde. May 24 is the day time froze, even as it marches forward.

We all live with this fear and reality, and they rose to prominence Tuesday as hundreds of parents swarmed Jefferson High School after hearing erroneous reports of gunshots at the campus. Thankfully, it was a false alarm. No shots were fired. But the parental response was very real fear. Many parents are on edge, with deep concerns about campus safety, a loss of trust in law enforcement post-Uvalde and with the failure of elected officials to embrace commonsense gun reforms.

At the most basic level, this is a nontragic reminder of how much work remains to reduce gun violence and make public spaces and campuses safer. The vast majority of Americans support universal background checks, red flag laws and raising the age to purchase firearms to 21. These reforms demand the same urgency in September that many felt on May 24.
