The race for this year’s only contested seat on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors has come down to two flawed candidates in the Nov. 8 runoff. We recommend former Alameda City Councilwoman Lena Tam but with reservations about both contenders’ past conduct as elected officials. Of the two, Tam would best represent the residents of District 3, which includes Alameda, San Leandro, San Lorenzo and part of Oakland.
Tam and Oakland City Council member Rebecca Kaplan received the most votes in the four-way June election, but neither won the majority needed to replace Supervisor Wilma Chan, who was fatally struck by a car in November 2021 while walking her dog. In a rushed and politically orchestrated process to replace Chan after her death, the remaining four supervisors appointed her chief of staff, David Brown, to serve the remainder of her term.
