At long last aid is reaching Syria, but Syrian President Bashar Assad is extracting a...

People search through the rubble of collapsed buildings in Syria following the earthquake there. The brutal Assad regime will monopolize on the tragedy. Nevertheless, the international priority must be helping the people of Syria and Turkey. On the Turkey-Syria border, more than 500 miles from his palatial residence in Damascus, an evil man has exacerbated an already catastrophic event.

“We have so far failed the people in northwest Syria,” Martin Griffiths, the U.N. under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs,In the depraved mind of the Syrian leader, blocking aid to the earthquake victims makes sense. Why rescue people you have been trying to crush since the civil war began 11 years ago?in the conflict’s first 10 years, according to the U.N. Human Rights Office. That is an astounding average of more than 80 deaths a day.

The countries and organizations providing aid must now await whatever compensation Assad may try to extract. He may make what the U.S. considers outrageous demands, including the permanent suspension of sanctions. So be it; there is only one concern for those delivering the aid — to help the thousands of victims now.

“I’m holding this bag for when they bring out my brother, and my brother’s young son, and both of their wives, so we can pack them in bags,”For concerned individuals, so far removed the devastation, there is still a way to help.
