In a rivalry game, in a game with first place in the Metro Mesa League on the line, David Vargas has never been better.
“I felt great today,” said Vargas, who improved to 3-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.06. “I’m always around the plate, and I love pitching in close games.”With two out, Ben Melendrez doubled off the fence in right-center. James Taylor followed with a double over the left fielder’s head.“That was a well-pitched, well-played game on both sides,” Montgomery coach Manny Hermosillo said of Vargas and his right-hander Jose Mendoza, who allowed just four hits.
Vargas was the benefactor of a one of the best high school double plays of the season. After Aaron Herrera reached on an error to start the sixth, Benji Solano sent a ball up the middle. Daniel Mora made a diving stop, rolled over and made a glove flip to shortstop Isaiah Lane, who touched second and nipped Mora at first.
