, the first of two expected eaglets hatched shortly after noon on Sunday to the Hays Pittsburgh Bald Eagles since they were laid – one on Feb. 17 and the other Feb. 20 – almost 37 days ago.

Since the eggs usually take between 35-38 days to hatch, it’s expected the second egg will crack any day now. Now that there is a newborn in the nest, you can count on one of the adult bald eagles to remain on the nest constantly for the eaglet to remain warm and to incubate the other egg. Additionally, the parents will feed the baby bird by bringing back food, tearing it into small pieces and leaning over to feed the eaglet, according to reports.

The Hays eagles are in their 11th breeding season, and their nest is located on a steep hillside above the Monongahela River. They have raised 18 eaglets in their time there. Once endangered in the United States, bald eagles continue to see increasing numbers. There are about 300 nesting pairs in Pennsylvania, which is way more than the three back in the early 1980s, according to
