'Dumbo' is Disney's latest live-action remake of one of its animated classic, but it didn't perform as strongly in its opening weekend compared to other remakes.

Disney's"Dumbo" took in an estimated $45 million over the weekend. That's below industry projections.

Jordan Peele's"Us" came in second place with $33.6 million, and now has earned over $100 million domestically . Peele is the first African-American writer-director to have multiple movies gross $100 million . Matthew McConaughey had the worst opening weekend of his career for a wide release movie with"The Beach Bum" only taking in $1.8 million. That's under his previous all-time low that happened earlier this year with the $4.4 million opening for"Serenity."It's uncommon for a Disney IP to not hit its industry box office projections or surpass it, but that's what's happened to the latest live-action remake of the Disney classic animated movie.

Tim Burton's look at lovable Jumbo Jr. took in an estimated $45 million over the weekend, that's below the $50 million most of the industry predicted it to make this weekend. Playing on over 4,200 screens, Disney gave the movie the ability to be another one of its many hits, despite having a feeling audiences weren't going to run to see a movie about an elephant with big floppy ears who is split up from his mother.

Opinion | 'Dumbo' remake is a dark, strange parable with a surprisingly anti-Disney messageTim Burton has used a classic Disney vehicle to set metaphorical fire to his master’s house. Will Walt Disney diehards notice? THINK OOH! A filmmaker commodifies our feeling of alienation from the media we so love... How's that for irony? THINK Burton is dark and strange. Hard pass. THINK I hated it. It's unnecessarily dark.
