Dallas Stars center Matt Duchene, front, celebrates after scoring the winning goal as defensemen Esa Lindell, back left, and Chris Tanev look on in the second overtime of Game 6 of an NHL hockey playoff series Friday, May 17, 2024, in Denver. After requesting a trade from the team that drafted him No. 3 overall around Christmas 2016, Duchene and the Avalanche faithful didn’t end on good terms.
“I don’t even know,” Duchene said. “I know I ended up on my knees like last time I got one in overtime, but how? I have no idea to be honest with you. It’s just elation.”The story couldn’t have written itself any better — in front of his former team after an earlier play that could’ve cost his team a chance to reach the conference finals.Duchene and Stars coach Pete DeBoer didn’t have much to say about the goal that was taken off the board earlier in overtime.
“I think, honestly, they didn’t want to make it a deciding goal,” Marchment said. “I get it, but I think there’s got to be some sort of standard because you can’t push a guy into your own goalie and it be goaltender interference. There’s just got to be some sort of standard.”“Really happy for Dutchy,” DeBoer said. “He’s ridden the confidence roller coaster here the second half and in the playoffs.
Duchene got his poetic ending in Colorado, but his job is not finished. The emotions may not be as high for him in a series against Edmonton or Vancouver, but the Stars will look for Duchene to break some more hearts on the road to what could be his first Stanley Cup title.
