Federal auto safety investigators say in a new report that they've identified hundreds of crashes — 13 of them deadly — in whichTesla has faced scrutiny for years over how it describes the system's capability, with critics saying Autopilot promises more than it can deliver.211 "collisions in which the frontal plane of the Tesla struck another vehicle or obstacle with adequate time for an attentive driver to respond to avoid or mitigate the crash.
"This mismatch of weak usage controls and high control authority was evident in these crash categories, which included indications of driver disengagement from the driving task," the investigators said in their report.: NHTSA's findings provide fuel for watchdogs who say semi-autonomy is less safe than driving by hand, because people don't understand the limitations or don't adequately monitor the system.
