The fact that Goku is easily the greatest hero in the classic Dragon Ball and DBZ anime is exactly why Akira Toriyama had a problem with his original portrayal, however, Dragon Ball Super seemingly made great strides to fix those issues, as Goku’s character in Super is definitely more in-line with Toriyama’s original vision.
In a 1997 interview with WIRED Japan , Akira Toriyama admitted that he was displeased with the portrayal of Goku in the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z anime. The reason was that Toriyama envisioned Goku as someone who just wanted to fight the strongest warriors in the universe, but the anime turned him into this ‘righteous hero’-type character.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Goku Didn’t Care About the Multiverse in Dragon Ball Super, Proving He Isn’t a Hero In Dragon Ball Super’s “Universe Survival Saga” by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou, the Z-Fighters are entered into the Tournament of Power after Goku pesters Grand Zeno to hold a multiversal tournament to see how strong the strongest fighters in the multiverse are, and then try to match his strength accordingly.
Obviously, Goku was concerned with saving his own universe, and he didn’t want to see other universes obliterated, but his mind was way more occupied with excitement over fighting the strongest warriors in the ring than any existential guilt brought on by his reckless actions.
The “Universe Survival Saga” alone is enough to prove that Goku is no ‘righteous hero’ the way he was in the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z anime, as his motives weren’t heroic at all, he just wanted to fight the strongest in the multiverse with no consideration for the consequences of such a tournament. This is something Akira Toriyama can be happy about, as Dragon Ball Super seemed to fix his biggest problem with Goku’s original anime portrayal.
