Austin's Downtown Commission suggests $600k for pedestrian barricades after a fatal hit-and-run, aiming to improve safety during large events.

The Downtown Commission in Austin, Texas, is recommending that the City Council allocate $600,000 in the 2025 Fiscal Year budget to purchase street barricades for improved pedestrian safety during large-scale events, following a recent fatal hit-and-run incident that killed one person and left another in critical condition.

Levinson, also the Vice Chair of the Pedestrian Advisory Council, said this issue hits home for her. "The city could end up paying out a whole lot more in settlements to families, for people who are injured and or killed, and we've already unfortunately seen one tragedy unfold this year because of this," she said., and left another person in critical condition, still fighting for their life.

Harris said this year, Council, now more than ever should approve of the recommendation, " Council will be inclined to include this in their funding priorities. Again, it is a nominal investment, so in the greater scheme of things, it makes no sense not to approve it," he said.
