Stocks kicked off April with steep losses on Tuesday, falling as investors braced for an onslaught of negative news around the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -4.44% finished around 974 points lower, down 4.4%, near 20,943, according to preliminary figures, while the S&P 500 SPX, -4.41% shed around 114 points, or 4.4%, closing near 2,471. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -4.

40% ended near 7,361, off around 340 points, or 4.4%. Stocks fell sharply in late February and March before recouping some of the decline, with the S&P 500 logging a 20% quarterly decline, its largest since 2008, and the Dow falling more than 23% for its biggest first-quarter decline on record and largest quarterly fall since 1987. Small-cap stocks have also suffered, with the Russell 2000 Index RUT, -7.03% falling harder than the other indexes Wednesday with a drop of more than 7%.
