Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
For the study, researchers examined crash data from 64 roundabouts two years before and two years after each roundabout was built. In addition to double-teardrop roundabouts, single and multi-lane roundabouts were assessed. In all cases, roundabouts were installed at traditional intersections that had been controlled by traffic signals and stop signs before the conversion.
The conversion to roundabouts resulted in a 47% reduction in injury crashes overall, compared with the number the researchers projected would have occurred if roundabouts had not been introduced, according to the analysis. At single-lane roundabouts, both total and injury crashes dropped by about 50%, but at double-teardrop roundabouts, total crashes dropped 63% and injury crashes fell 84%, the researchers said, explaining that the double-teardrop roundabouts may have showed such large safety benefits in Carmel because they were installed at crossing points with higher-speed roads that had more injury crashes in the period before the conversion than other converted intersections.
These intersections may also have benefited from speed reductions generally associated with roundabouts, the report said.
