Dothan makes first arrest under state law that makes electronic stalking illegal

Cases like this are also a reminder for everyone to have good situational awareness.DOTHAN, Ala. - Alabama House Bill 153 was passed last year but this week, the Dothan Police Department made its first arrest related to this law.”Electronic stalking is only the tracking of an individual location and when you do it with the intent to surveil, harass, stalk, it becomes a felony,” Lt. Scott Owens with DPD said.

Spencer sent threatening messages to the victim with over 50 phone calls and messages in 8 days. This is the exact kind of behavior the law mentions in addition to the tracking device. After days of investigation, police were able to crack the case open thanks to the victim’s smart thinking. “One thing in this case that really helped us, when the victim felt like there was a tracker put on the vehicle, she was able to look at her cameras and find out and see where the tracker had been placed,” Owens said.With the help of the district attorney’s office, these crimes will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.Cases like this are also a reminder for everyone to have good situational awareness.

If you feel you may have a stalker, make sure you are taking different routes to and from work and stop at a police station if you are being followed.”I would encourage anybody to make sure you know what the settings are for your phone and what the settings are for your electronics,” Owens said. “It does not just happen through your phone, it can happen with your laptop with somebody who is technically sound and knows how to work a computer.
