A soldier in the Old Guard places flags at graves in Arlington National Cemetery in preparation for Memorial Day, on May 29.A soldier in the Old Guard places flags at graves in Arlington National Cemetery in preparation for Memorial Day, on May 29.That might be one of the better things to say to a veteran this Monday. You should probably avoid the common refrain,"Thank you for your service," according to someone who should know.
As far as saying thank you goes,"I don't need to be thanked for my service," he tells NPR's Michel Martin."I think it's become kind of a platitude, toss-away thing to say." Shortly after the Civil War, Memorial Day began as Decoration Day."The reason for that is because it was a day on which Americans, South and in the North, would decorate the graves of soldiers who died in the Civil War," history professor Matthew DennisMaj. Gen. John A. Logan, who headed a group for Union veterans, declared in 1868 that Decoration Day would be observed on May 30.
It’s still ok to say ‘thank you for your service’

I disagree with this. If you have put it on the line for this Country being thanking veterans is a way to remember those who gave all.
For MemorialDay, a video tour of the first Commander-in-Chief, George Washington, and the American Revolution. From GW’s hometown of Alexandria, Virginia!
You can do whatever you want. There’s never a bad time to thank someone for their service & dedication to this great nation! Yes, we honor the fallen hero’s today, but I don’t see any problem thanking a veteran we run into.

Thank you Joe and Jill Biden for honoring the fallen heroes with compassion. POTUS spent his morning tweeting hate and divisiveness. I am sorry for this man who doesn't have a compassionate or sympathetic bone in his body.
Veterans, please know that we are very thankful for your sacrifice for US. Flag of United States🙏🏻 Also, please know that Donald dodged his civic duty with his “bone spurs.” You did not. 👍🏼 You deserve a better leader.
WajahatAli Couldn’t we and shouldn’t we express our gratitude every day?

Hearing “happy Memorial Day!” Is cringe inducing. You know what’s worse? The million explanations and ensuing debate. Every year.
I love how I see something like this every year haha let's all agree to get the definitions down now 😂
It is a time to also understand that Gold Star families are remembering their loss. There is an empty space in their lives and we mourn with them. Remember those who died in service and know this is a day that those who served with them struggle with the loss of their friends.
My dad's a vet, so I hear this rant quite often. They don't want to hear 'Happy Memorial Day' or 'Thank you for your service.' We don't just honor those who died serving, its also a time to honor all those who got us here
Thank you for telling people the difference between Memorial day and Veterans day. At the best of times, it is awkward when someone tells me, 'Thanks for your service', and inappropriate on Memorial day.
My Father Wally Filler served 4 years in the USNavy and was a Teacher at FIT. His passion was Textiles He pioneered the Synthetic Material, Puffy, used in Garments. I Love, Remember and Honor you today Father and always will MemorialDay MemorialDay2020
Thank you for this reminder. Sone people just don’t get it.
Did we really need an article to understand the difference... seriouslyamerica
Being thanked is always awkward for me. People are kind and they mean well so I smile and show appreciation for the acknowledgment, but I was paid to do what I did. We didn’t serve for free. Thank me when I protect our own shores in defense without compensation.
A huge shout out to all the heroes past, present, and future.
Imagine being so forcefully ignorant that you insist it's okay to thank servicemen and women for their service *even after they've asked you not to*.
This day is not for first responders or veterans, it’s for people who died while serving our Country. Please keep it that way 🇺🇸
NPR and NYTs hate veterans
This shouldn't be controversial. It's just a history lesson.
EXACTLY, SO MANY WHO NEVER SERVED OR UNDERSTAND THE SACRIFICE THAT WAS FREELY GIVEN BY THOSE WHO LOVED BEYOND MEASURE. THE WORD HERO IS USED FREELY THESE DAYS, BUT MEMORIAL DAY BELONGS TO THE REAL HERO'S.
Thank you for this. I said the same thing this morning. Not everything is our military. This is a memorial day of remembrance.
Video shows convicted violent felon convicted THIEF criminal who carried a loaded gun into a high school and injured two officers and the gun had the serial number filed off CASING A HOME MEDIA called this JOGGING CASING A HOME IS 'JOGGING'!!!
Lol wow.. y’all went off the rails over something you should have known since childhood..! LOL! And the next person I hear say “ ‘happy’ Memorial Day” should be walloped...!
I personally always thought it was a day to honor those that have passed. We would always go to the cemetery and put flowers on our deceased graves whether they were military or not. I thought Veterans Day was to honor all veterans, living and dead. What memo did I miss!?!
As a vet - I’m ready for the “thank you for your service” fetish to end. You want to thank us? Either tell your elected officials to actually take care of us, or perform some sort of public service of your own. Otherwise it’s just lip service.
I am also a Vet. Its common sense the difference between the two days, and its' OK to thank a vet any time or day.
“Thanks for killing innocent people abroad”
I took a beating on another cite several years ago for a post honoring my Dad who did not die. It made me angry. He fought & I honor him. I am angry that people would bash me. My uncle fought & died, I honor him, also. Both are heroes. Go for it, I await your angry tweets.
I know the difference. It isn’t about those who have served, it’s about those who gave their lives for this nation. It’s in memory of them.
You could say something like I'm sorry for your loss and devastation caused.
I just avoid thanking veterans entirely. Problem solved.
I’ll say “thank you for your service” every damm day I have the opportunity to thank a vet for their service.
Respectfully disagree. EVERY DAY is the time to thank those heroes who served, fought AND died for our country.
It’s about dead servicemen.🤷🏻♀️
F Democrats
Say what you want. This is a free fucking country. They are putting poor people with schizophrenia in jail here for cursing.
How about if I say whatever I fucking want to say because my relatives fought for that right?
I like to wish people a peaceful Memorial Day. After all, it’s the reason most of us veterans served. To preserve peace.
I think veterans appreciate it either way.
When will Trump be a National day off on the calendar?
