, the owner of a guesthouse on Isla del Sol in Lake Titicaca walked for an hour on a dusty path past Inca ruins to vote in a re-run of Bolivia’s election. He was worried. Last year’s contest had sparked a year of protests, driving up food prices and keeping tourists away. This time, polls predicted a runoff between Luis Arce, the candidate of the Movement to Socialism , which held power for 14 years until last November, and Carlos Mesa, a centrist former president.
Anger soon turned on Jeanine Áñez, the right-wing senator who took his place. She sent the army to quash protests, launched her own campaign and mismanaged the response to the pandemic. Nostalgia grew for the stability of Mr Morales’s early years. Mr Arce, who had been his finance minister, profited from that.
After his victory Mr Arce promised to “correct our mistakes” and govern “for all Bolivians”. Speaking in the pod of a cable car over La Paz, he said that he would welcome Mr Morales home, but not in a government role. Whether he keeps his word will be an early test of his independence. Both Mr Morales and Ms Áñez used the justice system to jail rivals.
This coming from a propaganda rag like the should be taken with a grain of salt.
Think you've made a typo, it 5% of the population he alienated.
The official position of the Economist is legalization as the ONLY solution to the drug war. Yet when it counts, when you discuss an economy and a nation riddled with drug violence, corruption and US meddling .. crickets. This was understandable years ago but still?
As Andrés Manuel López Obrador does it with México, alienating, destroying private property, among others...
Wow, I didn't know you were such a well wisher of the likes of Senor Morales.
giving a marching order to sovereign head of state. This is what they call elitism.
It's good that almost 100% of the comments are mocking the economist on this one.
Oh fck off
'news with a global perspective' my arse
The high mindedness here borders on parody. What an utterly obscene and lazy regard for the forces that defeated the reactionary far right, trained themselves by Klaus Barbie.
oh shuttttttt the fuckkkkkk uppppppp
As if foreign forces werent constantly conspiring against latin america to take over our economies and vast resources. Resources Europe already tapped out on so they steal from us and send their mafias to destabilize our regions. Murderers and thieves is what Europe has
Aww. Look at The Economist. Pretending that it has a fucking clue about Latin America. Bless.
This is priority.
A rigged election by corrupt socialists. They’re doomed to a fate similar to Venezuela.
if there is trouble, it will come from the coup plotters & their fascist supporters who are all backed by the US government who NEVER stops trying to dominate this region.
