The fourth time was a charm for second-seeded Dominic Thiem, 27, who finally bagged his first Grand Slam title at the US Open on Sunday night after three previous defeats. Thiem outlasted fifth-seeded Alexander Zverev, 23, who was at times seemingly inches away from the title, in four-plus hours of five wildly different sets that ended in a nail-biting fifth-set tiebreaker.
What began as a rout by Zverev—who raced through the first two sets 6-2 and 6-4 behind a booming serve and an almost offhandedly devastating forehand —gave way to Thiem taking advantage of his lapses in confidence and concentration to steal the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3.
Zverev served for the match at 5-3—only to see the game collapse into a Thiem break behind some severely shaky strokes both behind the baseline and at the net. Zverev seemed to be hobbled by the enormity of the prize in front of him.
The two friends embraced at the net and then, back in his chair, Thiem began giggling uncontrollably, seemingly partly in disbelief, while Zverev lapsed into the thousand-yard stare of what could have been. Moments later, Zverev was overcome by tears while giving his runner-up speech. “Unfortunately, my dad and my mother tested positive before the tournament and couldn’t travel with me. I miss them … [Zverev had to step away for a moment] I wish one day that I can bring the trophy home.
Thiem, for his part, used his champion’s speech largely to pay tribute to his friend Zverev. “You’re gonna make it 100 percent,” he said. “You’re going to make your parents proud.” He then thanked the United States Tennis Association for holding what was likely the most challenging Open ever—one which saw players and their teams living in a bubble under strict testing and protocol, but one which came off with barely a hitch.
