Domingo Germán’s career with Yankees likely over after 1st roster moves of offseason

Domingo Germán was placed on outright waivers on Thursday, the beginning of the end for a pitcher that threw a perfect game, was suspended for sticky stuff and landed on the restricted list all in one season.

Other teams now have an opportunity to claim any of those players over the next few days. If they pass through waivers untouched, they’ll either stick around within the Yankees’ minor-league system or elect free agency. For the Yankees, it’s the first step in purging an overloaded 40-man roster with free agency now underway.in August after an incident in the clubhouse at Yankee Stadium.

Perhaps a youngster like Randy Vásquez, Will Warren or Clayton Beeter can fill Germán’s shoes. Luis Gil will be back from Tommy John surgery in a position to compete for a big-league roster spot and depending on how the Yankees attack free agency, Clarke Schmidt isn’t guaranteed a rotation spot either. Only Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, Nestor Cortes and Michael King are locks within the starting staff, as of now.

Cordero pitched in 31 games out of the bullpen, posting a 3.86 ERA. Any early-season success was wiped away when Cordero was also placed on the restricted list, suspended for the remaining three months of the season for violating MLB’s Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.
