The Rhode Island Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the dogs have so much matting that staff will need to tranquilize and shave the dogs before they can determine their breed, age, weight or other health conditions.
The dogs were rescued from a home in Pawtucket Monday afternoon when police responded to an anonymous tip.An elderly couple lived in the home in what police called "abhorrent conditions" -- so bad that home's now been condemned. The care processes will take time, starting with shaving the dogs and getting them vaccinated at the SPCA's new Warwick facility.On average, it will cost $30 a day to keep an animal in a shelter," Kezirian said. "These animals aren't going anywhere, anytime soon. So, any donor support we can get for this will certainly help.
