This likely wasn't an overnight thing and I kinda get the feeling that Feige already knows who he wants to take over. This was just them officially letting people know that they were looking elsewhere.
It's about time Hollywood was far more inclusive, a none human director should be used to direct Doctor Strange 2. Every film and TV show as had a human director even films based on animals, look at the jungle book, outrageous. Equality for none humans.

Personally I liked the movie for what it was, but that was not the Doctor Strange I knew from the comics. It was Benedict Cumberbatch playing Sherlock again. I don't think the MCU gets Ditko co-creations, Mysterio is maybe the closest IMHO.
