Benedict Wong reveals that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness marks a huge MCU moment for his character, Wong. Set to be one of the darkest installments within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Multiverse of Madness' release date is now just days away. Beloved director Sam Raimi helms this highly anticipated project, which sees Benedict Cumberbatch return to attempt a clean-up of multiversal proportions, following the events of last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The film will also welcome back Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff, Chiwetel Ejiofor's Baron Mordo, and Rachel McAdams' Christine Palmer. Doctor Strange 2 also features newcomer Xochitl Gomez, who will make her MCU debut as young hero America Chavez. Also returning is Sorcerer Supreme, Wong, who audiences were first acquainted with back in 2016's original Doctor Strange.
"It's a huge sort of crescendo moment, I think, for Wong. We've seen how he's been stuck here, sedentary in the library, and now he's kind of moved out from the library. We've seen him fight upon - I can't say - in the film Shang-Chi, and so he's obviously been training ... And it's come to this; this greater responsibility that he has."
Wong's appearance in Shang Chi certainly took audiences by surprise, not only due to its unexpected nature but because it also saw the Sorcerer Supreme battle Tim Roth's Abomination, a character that has not been seen since 2008's The Incredible Hulk. His appearance raised a number of questions as to what Wong has been up to in all this time.
For many, Wong has been somewhat of an underrated character during his time with the MCU, so this news that Multiverse of Madness could have some major implications for his character going forward is certainly exciting. Wong's future in the MCU following the events of this sequel currently remains shrouded in mystery, however, with the multiverse at the story's core, there is any number of possibilities as to where audiences could see Wong pop up next.
