Disney Veteran Nancy Kanter Inks Netflix Deal

The executive's Available Light Productions will develop and produce kids and family programming for the streamer.Kanter and her Available Light Productions have entered a partnership whereby the company will develop and produce both animated and live action series and films for Netflix. The deal comes on the heels of her departure from Disney after 20 years.

Said Melissa Cobb, vp original animation at Netflix,"We want Netflix to be the home of the world’s best storytellers and creative visionaries, and few embody that more than Nancy Kanter. She’s already made a lasting impact on a generation of kids — creating opportunities to see their lives on screen and inspiring them to feel connected to something bigger than themselves.

The partnership with Kanter's company further signals Netflix's intention to be a major player in the kids and family space. The streamer has greenlit dozens of series and films targeting that audience, and the animated seriesof 2020, according to Nielsen figures. Kanter most recently was executive vp content and creative strategy for Disney Channels Worldwide, overseeing content strategy for all brands in the Disney Channels portfolio. As executive vp original programming and general manager of Disney Junior, she oversaw the launch of the channel in 2012 and shepherded shows includingPrior to joining Disney, she was an executive producer for Sesame Workshop and was president of the children's entertainment and learning site Bluecow.
