Directors Francis Ford Coppola, David Cronenberg, and Yorgos Lanthimos have been announced as competitors for the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, alleviating concerns about strikes in Hollywood affecting the event.

Item 1 of 2 Cannes Film Festival General Delegate Thierry Fremaux and Cannes Film Festival President Iris Knobloch attend the presentation of the official selection of the 77th Cannes International Film Festival in Paris, France, April 11, 2024.

Other directors unveiling their new films in competition include Italy's Paolo Sorrentino with the Naples-set "Parthenope", Brazilian Karim Ainouz's erotic thriller "Motel Destino" and France's Jacques Audiard with "Emilia Perez," a musical set in the milieu of a Mexican drug cartel starring Selena Gomez.

And "Rumours", a dark comedy out of competition, features Cate Blanchett channelling the likes of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a Group of Seven meeting that goes awry. Several big-name actors are making a Cannes appearance, including Richard Gere, Uma Thurman and Jacob Elordi, who all star in director Paul Schrader's competition film "Oh, Canada", as well as Hollywood icons Nicolas Cage and Demi Moore.
