From Juneteenth to the Tulsa massacre: What isn't taught in classrooms has a profound impact.

In May 1985, Philadelphia police dropped a bomb onto the compound of MOVE, a black liberation group, killing six members, five of their children and destroying 65 homes in the neighborhood.

“Black people have been saying this for the past 400 years, this is not a new movement,” he said. “Each generation has had their point in time where they’re trying to say through protest, through rebellion, ‘listen to us, listen to us,’” he said.“In many ways we wouldn’t have a Black Lives Matter movement if Black lives mattered in the classroom,” he said.

“I did something good. I made it famous. I made Juneteenth very famous. It’s actually an important event, it’s an important time. But nobody had heard of it,” he said, although his office has previously put out statements marking the occasion.

More stupid left-wing propaganda from so-called reporters. Let's discuss Africa's thousands of years of slavery and the brutal black dictators in Africa who oppress hundreds of millions of blacks.

What all kids need to be taught is sex education, trades, and financial education. Especially minority kids whose single parent still cashes her payroll/SSI check at a payday lender.

Enough

Black people are not victims.

No. I learned about important subjects

But why? These racists and racism and we are all from Adam and Adam is from Earth.

My girls learned about this at school. But it’s during summer vacation. It should be upto adults to drum up interest and support.

Dont forget respect for others, the failures of communism, and the economics of debt and taxation. Also not taught in schools and evident in today’s young people.

They sugar coat their history it's the latest trend in many parts of the world. education thehill WhiteHouse

Both are fake

It is made up.

Have to have “Black study’s” in all textbooks.

THE ACT OF WICKEDNESS

So NBC RACIST FAKE NEWS..... do all other Races get nothing. What about Native Americans? NBC NEWS is a RACIST organization pushing skewed history without full context. RACISM by NBC!!

Everyone learned that it was the Democrats who owned slaves, and the Republicans who freed the slaves. Same as it is today!

Sadly, no. I only remember learning about Washington Carver. I’m guessing he was the token. 😢

Wasn't that the work of the Trilateral Commission who seemed to fear most an educated populous regardless of race, color or creed?

You guys wouldn’t even know about Juneteenth were it not for Donald Trump. I don’t know if it’s a Texas thing or an East Texas thing. But I don’t even remember ever not knowing about Emancipation Day. Growing up, I thought it was a regular holiday.

Doesn’t matter, we’re erasing history anyway

And people are learning about all these things now in real-time and then coming on twitter to talk about it and there’s the whole pandemic thing still going on as well...so yeah 2020, man.

Lots of race baiting. Don’t know what moronic schools you people go to but this was taught when I was in school. Maybe you idiots just did not pay attention.

what a stupid name

I didn’t. Also I just recently learned about Tulsa. I never learned about that in school either. But our US history class was so white washed. I learned more about US history on the internet than I did 12 years of school...

History can be taught in full honesty without inciting anger or shame. Just like Christmas can be celebrated without children believing in Santa. If you focus on the lessons and advancements History brought about the results should be unifying. The problem is we didn't learn.

I learned about Juneteenth from news woman TamEdwards6abc at 6abc Amazingly told with a personal twist a few years ago.

There’s a lot of events that happened 100 years ago that aren’t taught in schools.

Can anyone point me to the teacher who did an experiment with his or her class where some students were on a red team and some were on a blue team (or something like that) and the instructions were to treat the “other” team as unworthy outsiders?

I have always had a difficult time with history. My books were only about treaties and ancient wars and most didn’t even touch on any events during or after the Vietnam war. History always felt watered-down and cherry-picked in favor of white conquest and dominion.

Nope. And I have never heard of this Juneteenth until now. Since abolishment of slavery was/is a victory why has it not /is not recognized as a national holiday? Doing so would provide us all a lesson in Black History & put our current crisis in perspective.

Public school sucks Public schools are primarily run by Democrats The Republican Party was founded to end slavey Juneteenth is essentially a Republican holiday, which is why Democrats never taught it and why a black Democrat president never tried to make it a national holiday

That has always been the strategy. That’s why it was against the law to know how, or teach to read. What better way to steal from a people. They cannot know, plus many black americans were smart, smarter than most of them.

Yeah right to busy lying about the founding fathers and making white men look like saviors! Histoyin this country is a joke and is white washed just like everything else

😢😢

Nope

I don't remember hearing about that in school or on any news story and news outlets, why is that? I just heard it about a month ago. Why has this horrible fact been so well hidden for 100 years?BlackWallStreetMassacre

What isn't taught in school is the dangers of Communism, and how many deaths it has caused.

WE AREN'T BLACK.....WE ARE THE INDIANS

It’s like liberals want all of history classes to now be racist acts in American history 😂 thank god that’ll never happen

We should remember all the white lives lost ending slavery, it’s nice that the fatherless animals of BLM now want to blame white people for their own failures in life today.

It can only taught in election years, when democrats need votes.

No! And I learned about the Tulsa massacre from watching Watchmen last year 😡

What about the terrible things done to Chinese immigrants.

Why the sudden obsession with Juneteenth?

Tulsa massacre 2020 is about to take place.

Rioting and looting were not taught in the classroom either.

Add the Declaration of Independence and World War II to the list.

True...I'm an old lady and I never heard of Juneteenth. No surprise since New Jersey was a hotbed of KKK for many years. KKK marches...the whole works. Public schools didn't dare talk about the 'Negroes'. Verboten in my house.

Ppl learned about JUNETEENTH2020 because Trump announced a trip to Tulsa.

Your policy is to support blacks till all these going down, then start everything against them again. All the news agencies are the same, because they run by the same people(rich zionist Jews)..

I knew about Juneteenth a long time ago. My mother was born on Juneteenth and my father was from Texas. We were never prejudiced against any race. We were taught at a young age to respect everyone as a human being. Nancy, R.N. Seattle.

Классно

WE KNOW. Only Black History taught in schools is primarily MLK, F.Douglass, Underground Railroad, G. Carver and Obama with a sprinkle of slavery.

How about teaching them about the great attributes of Africa 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Meanwhile..... I didn’t own any slaves!!!!

LkMoller13 I hated history classes in school. Too boring and too much homework. I should have paid attention or had better teachers.

MSNBC I didn’t learn about it in school. As an educator I took it upon myself and taught a lesson in Middle School in 2018. I am hoping ONE of my kids will remember I taught them about this day!

No sh👀t Sherlock

Any civics or history classes I attended in public school were in the late 40s and the 50s, and I'm quite sure I would have remembered such an event. Also I don't ever recall mention of Juneteenth in the media since. The history we were taught was biased to say the least.

They are not taught any American history never mind black history!!

But that’s exactly the point! Institutional, systemic racism demands that such events be excluded from history books and school curricula...

I wrote a book to help remedy that. It brings to light much of the hidden and/or ignored American history.

It will be great when all this race stuff is done. White Americans are White. Black Americans are Black. They are different. Raised differently, different history, different customs. Things are getting a little better but there will always be differences.

Absolutely learned about June teeth also learned about the consitution unlike Trump.SurrealRichardB

And it will get worse with standardized history tests. History, is not like Math. It should not be standardized and rushed through which is why no child left behind wanted it. To create indoctrination centers paid for by tax dollars.

Most children aren't taught those things. It's history, it's important and it NEEDS to be taught.

MSNBC

Teachers are just trying to make sure their students can pass the darn standardized tests 🤬No time for important things!

MSNBC Because less than 30% of black people celebrate it either....like Kwanzaa.

MSNBC I'll name 100 US history events you have never been 'taught' about. Verifiable actual events...because trying to cover even a year in history would take you literally a year. You cover deaths and great themes in general ed, not every single item of interest. C'mon.

Or the Holocaust

MSNBC This a ONE-RACE movement - HUMAN RACE! NOW is the time to be anti-racist. Words & feelings are not enough. Read, listen, plan, march, vote, speak out, step in, step up, act up, act out, & use your voice as a necessity. Choose action over observation; & progress over perfection!

MSNBC

Yet can’t remember world war 1 , world war 2, Korea , Vietnam and so on . Americans homeschool your children. Teach factual history not make believe racial lies . Feelings get you dead facts propel you forward

MSNBC True! It might be that the school year ends the first week of June and summer school begins in July. Since the 70s I have been teaching in the US, or training to teach. No commemoration of Juneteenth or Tulsa Race events in private or public schools - not even a mention!

If not for Watchmen, I would have never heard about the Tulsa massacre. Don't think this was accidental.

A lot of inner city kids can’t read and write. Let’s start with that.

Yes, but I am old and from the south.

Are they taught that ClemsonUniv is named for a confederate soldier?

No. Didnt know till after I graduated HS in 81.

MSNBC The liberals are never interested in the truth!

MSNBC I attended a mostly white middle class high school the SFO bay area and did not learn of it. My partner went to a predominately black high school in the east bay and DID learn of it.

MSNBC I learned about it on an episode of Blackish. It’s a shame I hadn’t before then.

MSNBC I blame Liberals for that.

KatiePhang Still proud to be an Okie?

MSNBC Hell, todays kids can even function because of liberal policies that is destroying your country!! Better wake up

MSNBC I Wasnt Taught either..And I went to School many many years ago..My History Book Read about Indians. Why was it SECRET ?

I did in Milwaukee public school. Had I stayed in catholic school system I doubt I would have. However, the first AF AM students (twins) were in my 4th grade class b4 I went to public school.

It was called the date of the emancipation proclamation. If you can’t pronounce that then make up whatever suits ya.

Everyday is a learning experience. Don’t expect school to educate you on everything & don’t think now that you’re out of school learning stops! It’s only beginning. BTW, on my iPhone this holiday was marked on my calendar. You’ve got internet to look it up!

MrJonCryer I didn’t know about and went to catholic school I’m so mad I was never told of this till I was probably 20 I will talk to my kids about this for sure so unfair it was taught to us

Became a state holiday in Texas in 1980 and first celebrated 1986. Surely, Texas schools recognize it

1FreshTake These days they barely touch history, apparently everything is now controversial so just don’t touch it, but we want critical thinking skills

No

MrJonCryer I grew up in Washington (Seattle K-7, Snohomish 8-12). We were taught about June 19th (no mention of the Juneteenth name that I remember). Reconstruction and civil rights history were also taught. This was back in the 80's.

I learned about this in the 7th and 8th grade in TX and US history. Let's see 1986-88. My daughter said that she wasn't taught anything about it and she just completed the 8th grade. Surprised me!!

ajgma Potus is a clear and present danger to the American lives he has sworn to defend by scheduling and holding these rally's amid a viral pandemic. He needs to be arrested and tried for attempted murder. And if anyone dies as a consequence, tried for 1st degree murder.

I don't have enough faith in public school curriculum to teach it the way it needs taught.. we should teach our children history, even the ugly shameful history so it does not get repeated, but it is going to be up to parents and other outside help to teach them.

MrJonCryer This is very true. I learned about them on my own through reading, media and conversation with friends who are also into learning. Never heard it mentioned in school once, yet every year we reread about Washington crossing the Delaware and Christopher Columbus being a 'hero'

This year’s Juneteenth is a moment to remind TheDemocrats that they: Voted against the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery. Voted against the 14th Amendment granting former slaves citizenship. Voted against the 15th Amendment, granting former slaves the right to vote.

What about the MAJORITY of Americans, IRISH? Is their story taught? Is the Story of Irish Slavery in the Americas taught? More of Earl Greys Slave Ships left from the British Isles and Ireland than Africa. Is that taught? What about the Chinese Slaves? Is that taught? GET REAL!

KatiePhang Nor are those committed against Hispanics like the Zoot suit riots...

So funny seeing how blatant all you networks are with jointly trying to divide this country with nonstop race-baiting propaganda to oust Trump. Heck even Biden will be picking his VP based on race. Haha. Wow. Another massacre like this is what MSM was/is trying to create.

They didn’t want us to become “empowered”! What a shame America 😥. To deprive a whole people of their history.

Bville_Schools definitely does not teach black history.

Okay

Anyone can learn anything they’re interested in. Nothing is stoping anyone.

There is a ton of History not taught in the US Education System. There is a reason for this. Schools have become indoctrination centers. Many don't know that it was not only taxation that led to the Revolutionary War. Even fewer know that it was Dems. who fought for slavery.

Yes I did

I have a hunch if we took a survey most Texans would not know slavery existed in Texas. 🤔

did you know most of these stories get taken out because they don't want anyone to get upset so gone is the Trail of Tears, any mention of slaves or emancipation, skip over the civil rights and you get what's going on today.

Agreed. I knew nothing about Tulsa until I saw The Watchman on HBO.

The reason why America has not taught us our history I believe is because if we learn we start to ask questions and take pride in our history and they fear 😱a black insurrection im telling you that's what it is they want us to be kept in ignorance

I did NOT learn about Juneteenth in school. The only reason I knew about the protests of the 60's was because I was ALIVE AT THE TIME.

I completely agree. They must be taught. The whole, complete story, nothing edited out so it slants to support one political party or another. Can’t use emancipation example to support values espoused by Dems to breed future dem voters. That one goes the wrong way.

I read about it maybe 10 or 15 years ago. That's because I am an AVID reader. Most people are not.

They leave out the Native American history, too. The Trail of Tears...The Long Walk...massacres, white ppl (yes some white ppl against the harm done to Natives and Africans), and Africans running at night to escape. Natives shielded ppl who were good to them and protected them.

I had about a 5 min explanation of it during a history class at Oklahoma State in the 80's nothing in high school it wasn't even talked about I only knew of it as a child because my grandfather witnessed it because he drove a produce truck that delivered to the area.

It shames their parents that are not capable of handling the real truth about America's History that it evades on purpose

Because of the Democrat party. themoreyouknow

Does US education system have ever taught about the Chinese American discriminated history? Such as the American Chinese Exclusion Act Why you only focus on the Black but ignore the Chinese Americans who are the most miserable victims of the🇺🇸 anti-Chinese system racism bully?

Not at all. Not Juneteenth, not Black Wall Street, not the Trail of Tears. History was written to favor the white mans point of view!

This is so true. I'm actually embarrassed to be white and not know history. I should say the real History. Not what they wanted me to know

No. I did not. I learned about Juneteenth a year ago or so when I noticed it in my calendar on my phone. Sad.

No, I've never heard of it, and I'm a teacher!

Hell no...learned a lot in college

Nor were people taught MLK was Republican, KKK are Democrats, and ending slavery was opposed by Democrats.

Going to a predominantly white school, as a black kid. This was never thought. But, my grandma always made sure I knew my roots, and for that, I'm thankful every day I had her in my life. JUNETEENTH2020 junteenth BlackWomen

Or the truth about the Democratic Party

The captain never tells the crew enough to run the ship.

'Many' are not taught? Try 'Most'....

Trump made Juneteenth famous

No one knew about Juneteenth not even you NBC. It's only a thing now because you leftists wanna USE the suffering of those people to bring down Trump. You still don't care about black people.

Really!

It’s not by Accident🤦🏾‍♀️! Happy Black Independence Day Everbody💃🏽🕺🏾🎊🎉🎊🎉!

ALL Black children (and POC) have been denied access to the history, and most importantly, the ACHIEVEMENTS of their peoples. Even in modern times, accomplishments are virtually hidden from view by White owned media in all forms.underthebushel

Many children aren't taught about the USS Liberty attack either, but teaching history to children should begin with it's outlines instead of it's minor details. Details can be filled in over time. We never really stop learning about history.

Nope. I lived in northern states, but wish I had been informed.

Nope. Never heard anything about it until today.

Slavery hasn't ended neither for the Black nor White man for they're held in the bondage of sin. Only a few know the Way to freedom!

Amazingly (only to you) in rural Montana I did learn it. Maybe there's something wrong with the city schools 🤔

They also aren’t taught math correctly.

No I did not. In college

Because Democrats don’t want you to know their real history.

They aren’t taught about the history of socialism and communism, and the millions who died because of it, either. Lots of room for improvement in education.

How about you talk about the devastating effects of The Great Society, or the fact that Planned Parenthood is the greatest killer of black lives in this country and was created to be that? Or talk about the part where the Left has been a champion of these crime bills 1/

I learned about several black historical events, but Juneteenth was not one that I recall.

As the US grapples with a racial reckoning following the killing of George Floyd, educators say that what has and what has not been taught in school have been part of erasing the history of systemic racism in America and the contributions of Black people and minority groups (2/9)

fcpsnews SouthCountyMS pakownacki An important article to read.

TODAYshow Honestly I learned about it from an episode of Blackish. I had no idea.

RT UFT clearly blame UFT uftacts rweingarten

Did not ever hear it, or know it, and thus never taught it!

It's called history.... his story!

TODAYshow No, sadly

It should be taught in schools ‼️

Also not taught- the Democratic Party was the pro slavery party, created the Jim Crow laws and held the longest filibuster on the senate floor in 1964 trying to try and stop the civil rights act.

TODAYshow It's people like this Marine who keep a level head and talks truth. Everyone needs to watch this video NOW. It's from 2015 but still relates today!!

Didnt know about it till 2 weeks ago

On this PrideMonth you could also point put the ignorance and erasure of LGBTQ history.

The reasons why Chinese eat bats and everything..

Nope never heard of it

No. Wasn't taught. I didn't know about it until I moved to Chicago in the mid 1970s (don't do the math). It was, maybe still is a huge grassroots celebration.

TODAYshow School thought me nothing about Juneteenth only spoke about MLK A COUPLE CHAPTERS AND how THE GREAT CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WAS 🌎I FAILED HISTORY BECAUSE I ASKED TO MANY QUESTIONS AND TOLD MY TEACHER BLACK PEOPLE DID MORE THAN BE SLAVES 😔👌🏾🕊🕊🕊🕊☝🏾✊🏾

You should learn all about WWI and WWII somewhere other than our recent history books. You'll find many things you didn't know.

AirForceGirl58 Absolutely true!

They only teach up to Lincoln freeing slaves, and that’s it. If in college and take world history they teach about Juneteenth. Latin history teaches you lots too.

The US school system skips over stuff that makes whites look bad outside slavery and skips over every riot/protests achieved policy because they don’t like promoting riots get things done.

Never heard of Juneteenth. Not for more racially motivated holidays either. I want celebrations for all Americans and am looking forward to the 4th of July!

If all of the major networks refuse to film Donnie’s event in Tulsa (clearly we cannot count on Fox)....it sure would hit him where it hurts. I realize this is a ratings thing - but it would make an amazing statement to the world. We need that right now.

See something, say something.

Kind of like the Gulag Archipelago?

All they teach is hatred.

I know there are many who try to get it included in their lesson. For some, it is about time and standard. For others, resistance from the administration.

Add the electoral college and Constitution to that list
