Dick Odette, formerly head of music purchasing for Musicland Group, has died at age 77.

Odette was the key executive in deciding which albums were carried in hundreds of Musicland stores in the 1980s and 1990s., who in the last two decades of the 20th century was one of the most important executives in deciding the commercial fate of new releases as head of music purchasing for the more than thousand-store Musicland Group, died of natural causes on Aug. 5 in Estora, Florida. He was 77.

Odette, who joined Musicland in 1983, was the key executive in deciding if a label’s album was carried in hundreds of Musicland stores in the 1980s and more than a thousand stores in the late 1990s. “We were lucky to have Dick Odette [as] a part of our lives and heading up purchasing at the largest music retail chain,” says, who nowadays is an executive at Gotham Distributing/Collectables Records/Oldies.

Indeed, a litany of comments from former and current music industry executives on Facebook testify to that assessment., who was senior vp sales at Decca Records until he retired, says, “Dick was an icon in our industry and a really good guy.”, a former top executive at CEMA Distribution and currently chief commercial officer at Better Noise Music, recalled Odette as “a man of class and integrity.
