JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A veterans job fair with more than 60 exhibitors was at Jacksonville's EverBank Stadium.
Hundreds of veterans were there in hopes to land an interview. To some veterans, they expressed how they know all too well the challenges of finding a job after serving the country. To Demika Jackson, an Army veteran who served for six years while on active duty, answering the call to serve the country wasn't the challenge. It was getting a call for a regular 9-to-5 job.
"You have been conditioned to serve as a soldier and to perform the job you were trained to do," Jackson said."But when we get out, now we have less than a week, a few weeks to transition. To try and recondition ourselves to the civilian world." , as of February 2024, the veteran unemployment rate was at 2.8%. It is a small increase compared to last year's rate of 2.5%. However, the stat continues to trail behind non-veteran unemployment rates.
Nowadays, Jackson is no longer looking for employment. Actually, she is looking for employees. Her business builds non-profit organizations in the United States. The Army veteran said she hopes employers will be patient with veterans. To Jackson, a veteran is an exceptional employee to a company. "They were dedicated to serving the country, let them be dedicated to serving your company," she said. WTLV would like to send you push notifications about the latest news and weather.
