DeSoto police Chief Joseph Costa, who has helmed the Dallas suburb’s Police Department for more than a decade, is one of more than 30 candidates vying to become the city of Austin’s next police chief.said she was “supportive of any path” the chief chooses. DeSoto is 10 miles south of downtown Dallas and home to about 55,000 residents.
“Joe is a valuable member of our community and has done an excellent job of building a police department that we are proud of and that serves the people of DeSoto well,” Proctor said in the Wednesday release.Costa came to DeSoto in 2012 from the Dallas County sheriff’s office, where he worked since 2005, according to his bio on the city’s website.
The DeSoto Police Department came under scrutiny after officers were accused of brutalizing a family after a 911 call in fall 2018. Body-worn camera footage obtained through the state’s open records law and analyzed byshowed that three officers’ cameras were dark during the encounter. One officer did not have his camera. The department’s policy says officers should activate their cameras before arriving at scenes.
