Two weeks before Derek Hough's 'Symphony of Dance' tour was scheduled to arrive at San Diego's The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in December, tragedy struck. Hough's wife and dance partner on the tour, Hayley Erbert, suffered a cranial hematoma during a live performance on Dec. 5 and underwent major brain surgery a few days later. The 60-city tour went on indefinite hiatus.
When the Houghs’ parents split and home became a tumultuous place, the Ballases invited Derek and Julianne to live and train with them in London. “I was just fascinated by this gift that this boy had,” said Shirley Ballas, now a judge on the British show “Strictly Come Dancing.” But she also recognized what was lacking. “He just needed to learn discipline and the art of how to put it all together,” she said. In England, Hough trained in many styles of dance as well as acting and singing.
