Officers encountered who they believed were homicide victims in a DoubleTree the city is leasing as part of Mayor Mike Johnston’s All In Mile High initiative, which aims to move 2,000 homeless people indoors by Dec. 31. The initiative is being funded by federal taxpayers via FEMA and the American Rescue Plan.
The city has sought to address an influx of migrants by connecting them with social services while closing encampments. Earlier this month, the Department of Excise and Licenses asked property owners whether they were willing to rent to arriving immigrants. Denver has also focused on consolidating its shelter operations to reduce the city budget. The mayor argued the reduction would counteract the financial drain brought on by the migrant inflow.
