North American Dental rents the office, owns the equipment, employs the staff, handles the billing and, according to insiders, sets the revenue targets. The dentists are employed by a second affiliated company that owns the practices.
The debt from private-equity-driven leveraged buyouts can put tremendous financial pressure on companies like North American Dental. In December 2017, North American Dental Group had total debt of $128 million, according to company financial data reviewed by USA Today/Newsy. Verena McClain, a student from Germany, joined the fray after she was treated by Krueger two years after he joined North American Dental.Krueger told her she needed to replace a crown she had just gotten in Germany. Over the course of two more visits, he said she needed four crowns, at a cost of $5,900. With insurance and a discount, her out-of-pocket share would come to $3,300.

I believe it. I've worked for companies that have over treatment planned and I've worked for great family dentist who don't. The difference is so obvious.
This is why dental offices get a bad rep. Because of the greedy corporate dental companies

Very true-Dentists R the Biggest liars on the planet. When I need dental work, I go overseas & take a dental vacation. Try the Filipines or Thailand. Amazing prices. It's cheaper 2 fly & vacation, while getting Dental work & still come out ahead.
I went to a dentist with tooth pain. I was told I needed 3 root canals with crowns roughly $10,000. I went to the dental school, were they actual care. I was told that my teeth were fine and I just needed a new night guard.

I had a coupon for one of these places. $35, a great price for a dental cleaning and a free electric toothbrush. By the time they were done with me, they told me I needed $850 worth of other treatment. I took my free electric toothbrush and told them to take a hike.
