“I’ve always said that Paris has the Eiffel Tower, New York has the Statue of Liberty, and Aptos has this cement ship,” Newhouse said. “And a big part of the cement ship was the pier. It gave us access to step foot on the ship. When public access [to the ship] was closed in 2001, you could still walk up to the ship and personally view all 630 feet [from the pier]. The pier allowed fishermen to get access to fish out the shore and past the breakers. It was a view you normally don’t get to see.
The Seacliff State Beach pier was built in 1930 to allow visitors to walk out to the SS Palo Alto, a permanently stationed amusement ship, but faced irreparable damage during a major storm Jan. 5.State Parks announced the project last month. The demolition is expected to take six weeks to complete. Since the wood used to build the pier was treated with a known carcinogen called creosote, State Parks is taking a meticulous approach to removing the pier so as not to disturb the ecosystem.
“All pier material is considered hazardous waste and will be disposed of in a safe and responsible manner,”
