Reps. Sylvia Garcia , Delia Ramirez , Pramila Jayapal , and Sen. Alex Padilla held a press conference with a group of Dreamers on Wednesday, marking the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.aimed to limit the number of migrant crossings of the southern border, the group of Democrats is pushing for the administration to launch another round of executive orders to create some balance between the strict immigration crackdown and immigrant rights.
“I think people need to do what is right for them,” she said. “It’s really difficult for me to tell someone that I’m going to keep promising you and begging you to vote for someone that can’t deliver. I take it very personal. My own credibility is on the line in this moment.” Garcia and other members of the CHC presented a variety of reforms during a meeting with the president at the White House last month, including efforts to grant new labor protections and legal rights to undocumented farmworkers, expand work permits to more immigrants, shield the undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens, and apply protections to Dreamers. They also want Biden to create a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
However, a pathway to citizenship has been controversial for decades, especially among many Republicans who continue to characterize the policy as “amnesty.” That is why some Democrats are emphasizing it’s time for Biden to work unilaterally. “The only thing more shocking than our unsecure southern border is that we haven’t had a terror attack on our soil — yet,” said Sen. Steve Daines , the chairman of the Senate Republicans’ campaign arm during a Wednesday press conference. “Make no mistake. It was Joe Biden who rolled back the successful Trump policies that kept this nation and our southern border much safer.
