- Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg unveiled an ambitious plan on Tuesday to transform the economy of rural America, including spending $80 billion to provide high-speed internet and $50 billion over a decade to help farmers combat climate change.
Buttigieg was due to unveil his plan as he begins a two-day, seven-county swing through southeast Iowa. The Midwestern state kicks off the Democratic nominating contest in February. “Our government too often treats rural America as an afterthought,” Buttigieg said in a statement before the plan was due to be unveiled.
The Indiana Democrat proposes matching federal funds for every dollar spent, up to $100,000 per opportunity, for the 1,000 most innovative rural businesses, to try and spark innovation and job growth.

Why? Who cares.
I hope that includes free internet based college degrees for ALL US Citizens
Let’s hope Community Networks are on that list and issues for tribal communities
That’s insane. We already blew billions under Obama to bring broadband to rural areas and spent $349,234 per household to connect homes in three areas that received funds.
Has he just descended from heaven?
I'll want a slice of that $80 billion plan for my creativity .😉😎
This picture is hilarious because at first glance, he looks like an angel.
does he know that elonmusk is already doing that and it will be done for a tenth the price?
His plan is obvious: he wants the next generation of rural Americans to be informed and educated and shift to the left.
the internet? The globalists must love you. Talk about subsidizing big business
Yet some people don't have rubbing water... priorities...
Politicians should never project expenses. Just give us the ideals and we’ll love you again.
People leave the cities to get away from it and you want to litter the rural areas with Internet - the very people you rail against because we live in a representative republic and not a popular democracy? You really want to hear their voices or just take their $$?
Sure. Take more taxes.
Yeah it’s called Starlink and Elon will have it ready for rural Antarctica in a few years. But hey let’s spend $80Bn
If you like your internet, you can keep your internet
...have access to online schooling, and feel part of this century. Cell service should be next!
Many will say “waste of money”. But that’s likely their privilege talking. If you have had internet access for 10, 15, 20 years you won’t get it. If you pay a reasonable amount for that service, you won’t get it. This is necessary for all Americans to stay connected...
Healthcare? Minimum wages? Taxes? Strange priorities.
I would rather see quality health care and education first
I’m about as rural as you can get and I love my internet. Will I be able to keep it? 😎
Admirable. But I would rather see housing for all first.
I'm concerned with plans like this there won't be room for another trillion dollar tax cut for the rich
Didn't we already pay for that and At&T just not deliver
