On December 16, Los Angeles–based tattoo artist, who's responsible for many of Lovato's delicate tattoos, posted an Instagram snapshot of someone's neck scrawled with the word "survivor" in thin, swirling script. The tags in his caption confirm that the neck in question is, indeed, Lovato's. "On a real one 💪🏼🙏🏼 ," he wrote before tagging her.
Lovato has yet to post any mention of the new tattoo on social media, but that's likely because she's taking a hiatus in what people assume is the lead-up to her next studio album. Her last post, from December 4, is a blacked-out square captioned, "The next time you hear from me, I’ll be singing...." Needless to say, it sounds like this new ink is just one part of her well-deserved break from the spotlight.
On anyone else, the word selection of this tattoo might come off as cliché, but on Lovato, it's a downright statement. Throughout her career, she's been nothing but open about her experiences with substance abuse, eating disorders, and mental illness, all the while living with those things under the scrutiny of the public eye. The word "survivor" is undoubtedly a fitting choice for the singer to permanently etch on her neck, where the whole world can see it.
