Jared Klinghoffer, a Deerfield senior and another of the organizers, recognizes his generation will awake one day to the news the last Holocaust survivor died.

Deerfield students heard two Holocaust survivors tell their stories in person, and a University of Minnesota professor speak virtually about boarding schools for Native Americans Monday at the school’s eighth-annual Genocide Commemoration Day.

People will no longer be able to hear stories from Brent and Metz firsthand. As Brent, a Wilmette resident and retired dentist, told his story of living though Auschwitz and two other Nazi concentration camps, he emphasized how important it is to keep telling his story so something like the Holocaust never happens again. He wishes people would listen better.

While President Joseph Biden has called Russian actions in that country’s current war with Ukraine genocide, student and faculty organizers were not ready to apply the term. Alex Lysenko, a Deerfield teacher and faculty sponsor, wants to experts to make that designation.
