Deer Park plant fire has reignited, Shell says

Ambulances rushed down state Highway 225 when the large fire started Friday. The fire at Shell’s Deer Park Chemicals facility has been extinguished. We continue to monitor the affected area for hot spots that could reignite. The exact cause of the fire wasn’t announced by Saturday morning. Earlier, Shell said the unit was undergoing maintenance when something ignited cracked heavy gas oil, cracked light gas oil and gasoline.

“Every time there is an event – a large-scale fire like what happened yesterday or even everyday flares – industry representatives tell us there is no cause for concern, that the lingering smells, smoky air, and even itchy throats and coughs are ‘normal,’” said Jennifer Hadayia, the executive director of Air Alliance Houston. History has shown that these early statements are for the benefit of industry public relations and not public health.

– a cancer-causing chemical -- lingered in the air in Deer Park for weeks following the 2019 Intercontinental Terminals Company fire, when chemical storage tanks leaked a highly-flammable chemical, which then ignited and burned for 18 hours.
