“I may need to stop until this ordinance is resolved,' Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling said. 'This (publicity) is probably not going to be met with a lot of favor. I’ll just have to man up and deal with it.'

A Decatur ordinance prohibits Airbnbs and other short-term rentals in the city, but since at least August those wanting a short stay in Decatur’s historic district could rent a small house for as little as $70 a night from Mayor Tab Bowling.

In September, after he began renting out the cottage house and as the council was discussing the possibility of relaxing the ban on short-term rentals, Bowling told The Daily that lots of people were renting houses for short stays despite the ban. Bowling said he “was told” that the ordinance banning short-term rentals is “very vague.” He said he did not talk to the Legal Department about having a short-term rental or about any vagueness in the existing ordinance. He said his belief that the ordinance is vague came from the Planning Department, although he said he did not alert the department to the fact he was engaging in the prohibited rentals.

“It was just a financial opportunity to have a property that we own, that’s right next to our house behind a brick wall, that was just sitting there and we’re able to do that,” Bowling said. “... How many of these have you seen in the city? There are quite a few.” “We are supposed to uphold the laws that are on the books and if we don’t like those, we can certainly look at working together to change them,” Ladner said. “But until we do that I think it’s important for elected officials to model the way for citizens on abiding by the laws that are on the books.”

This is Alabama's typical politician. Slimey to the core, and think they're above the laws that the community must abide by. Should have voted out every incumbent last week, instead of re-electing 94% of these bozos.
