Metro Health is rolling out stickers in San Antonio wherever restrooms are offered to customers or the public.

Go inside a restroom in a business — a bar, restaurant, tire shop or anywhere else the public gathers — and you’ll see the writing on the wall. Some of it isn’t fit to print, but prophets and poets sometimes speak there. So do public health professionals. A new message soon will appear among these intimate billboards, offering a lifeline to those living in fear of domestic violence. There’s a big reason. San Antonio ’s domestic violence numbers are high.

Catch up with Elaine’s ‘Nosotros’ podcast on YouTube In 2020, San Antonio recorded 12,184 family violence offenses, 774.5 per 100,000 residents. By the next year, in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, it was 16,240 offenses, or 1,019.7 per 100,000 people. And by 2022, the latest data available, the number of offenses rose again — by slightly less — to 16,568, or 1,130.5 per 100,000 residents.

Erica Haller-Stevenson, public health administrator in Metro Health’s Violence Prevention Section, knows there will be naysayers, but she points to several benefits.

didn’t help. While staying home contained the spread of the life-threatening virus, it also kept people confined, out of work and out of school. That can equate to a rise in domestic violence. San Antonio is at least ahead of the curve in establishing a domestic violence subsection in Metro Health. The number of public health departments around the country with such divisions remains small. They’re focused on unintentional injuries. Violence is different. It’s intentional.
