It sprung out of the ether, from the unlikely confluence of a stage, and a moment, and the wild, over-the-head layup that highlighted one of the most memorable comebacks in the history of Texas basketball.
In an instant, Blanks had become a bona fide March Madness sensation, and everyone back home in Austin knew it. The Taco Bell he and fellow UT guards Travis Mays and Joey Wright used to frequent on Guadalupe put up a sign, bragging, “BMW eats here.” And within a day, Blanks noticed fans wearing T-shirts – sold at the University Co-op bookstore – emblazoned with the phrase, “Dance with Lance and the Runnin’ Horns.
“Who is his marketing team, because they need to get on that,” Longhorns guard Tyrese Hunter said. “’Cook with Rice,’ ‘Cook with 10,’ ‘Bet on ‘Bari,’ he could have something, for sure. One-hundred percent.” Decades after Blanks shimmied against Xavier, the longtime manager of the University Co-op met him at a UT event.
