Since the Samoan government declared a national measles epidemic in late October, at least 53 people -- nearly all children -- have died from the highly contagious, vaccine-preventable disease. Most of them are children under the age of 4.

The Samoan government officially declared a state of emergency on Nov. 15 and then launched a mandatory vaccination program for priority groups, including children and women of childbearing age who aren't pregnant. More than 58,000 people have been immunized against measles on the two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i. It typically takes about 10 to 14 days for the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to become effective.

Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that infects the respiratory tract then spreads throughout the body. It typically begins with cold-like symptoms and a fever, then a rash of flat red spots breaks out on the skin a few days later. As many as one out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young children. And about one child out of every 1,000 who get measles will develop encephalitis -- swelling of the brain -- that can lead to convulsions and cause deafness or intellectual disability, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

FYI: Vitamin A deficiency is a major contributing factor to severe measles and the high deficiency of Vitamin A in Samoan children is officially considered a 'public health concern'

Are you paying attention anti- vaccines proponents!

7NY That’s what happens if you live in the warm country all year around that hot humid weather could have germs all around your body. The best thing for everybody to live is either dry heat by the desert which it gets cold at night or live in the cold weather.

This is why the anti-vax movement is so counterproductive & wrong. There’s no proof that vaccines do anything other than drastically reduce child mortality rates.

The government has banned children from public gatherings and mandated that all 200,000 people living on the South Pacific island get vaccinated. 50 children killed by measles in Samoa as outbreak worsensA measles outbreak in Samoa has killed 50 babies and young children as authorities race to vaccinate the entire population of the South Pacific nation How awful for those poor babies. Is financing an issue? Legitimate ways to donate? So? Still against mandatory vaccines. And let's all remember that this is thanks to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s anti-vaxx efforts in Samoa which caused it to have the lowest vaccination rate in all of the Pacific.
