NEW: Capitol Hill negotiators have reached an agreement on an $8.3 billion measure to battle the coronavirus outbreak.

The agreement came together after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., dropped a demand, opposed by the drug industry, to guarantee that any vaccines and drug treatments developed with government-backed research — but manufactured by drug companies — be offered at"affordable" prices.

The bipartisan legislation includes: $350 million to aggressively go after the virus in “hot spots” like Washington state; $500 million to buy drugs, masks, and other medical supplies for states, local governments and hospitals; $1 billion to reimburse state and local governments for costs incurred in battling the outbreak; and $300 million for the Centers for Disease Control's rapid response fund.

The agreement comes as the outbreak in the U.S. appears increasingly likely to affect workers who are instructed to stay home, immigrants who may fear seeking treatment because they are in the U.S. illegally, and the potential rapid spread among homeless people. Widespread school closures are possible as well.

Some head of a pharmaceutical co just financed his baby blood transfusions for the next 25 yrs.

Anyone else as suspicious as me about this sudden bout of mass hysteria regarding this virus? It's less than half as lethal as the seasonal flu. Oh, and thanks for swineflu USA, you gave it to Mexico, then shared your breed with NewZealand..Felt like a head cold though. Haha

That’s ridiculous ! How much permanent spending is this putting in? 😡It’s the flu! We get new major strains every few years.

Does it pull forward benefits for SSI/SSDI Vets and any other recipient of gvt benefits? Because if it doesn’t you have left a large portion of Americans out of any chance to stock food supplies

What a bunch of Crap $3000 before insurance JUST to get tested and for a Virus!! Insane!! - CoronavirusOutbreak DNCCorruption

US peace deal leaves Afghans to determine post-war landscapeHigh Stakes: Now that the U.S. has signed a deal with the Taliban to eventually leave Afghanistan, it will soon be up to Afghans on both sides of the conflict to decide what peace will look like. By Kathygannon Kathygannon OMG🙏😢💔 Kathygannon What did peace look like when the US was there? Kathygannon We all hope for peace for Afghanistan. The question: how effective will this be? So far, with the current US administration, the 'let's leave-and-let them sort it out-amongst themselves' attitude doesn't yet seem to be working. Engagement is key for successful outcomes.
