Monday warning Americans of an alarming surge in fake prescription pills containing fentanyl and methamphetamine sold illegally on the black market.... [+]Criminal drug networks, operating both domestically and outside the U.S., are mass-producing fake pills and falsely marketing them as legitimate prescription pills,The agency has already seized more than 9.5 million counterfeit pills in 2021, more than the last two years combined.
The number of counterfeit pills containing fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, seized by the DEA has skyrocketed by nearly 430% since 2019. Worse yet, officials report an increasing number of the confiscated pills have been found to contain at least 2mg of fentanyl, which is considered a deadly dose. Some of the most commonly found counterfeit pills, often sold on social media or e-commerce websites, are produced to look like prescription opioids such as Oxycontin, Percocet, Vicodin and Xanax.
The DEA notes their alert does not apply to legitimate pharmaceutical medications prescribed by medical professionals and distributed by pharmacists.That's the percentage of seized counterfeit pills with fentanyl that contain a potentially lethal dose, according to DEA laboratory testing. the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drug deaths in the U.S.
