In an interview, golf analyst David Feherty discussed the Austin golf scene, the impact of LIV Golf on the PGA Tour, and the legacy of sportscaster Verne Lundquist.
David Feherty, former professional golfer and current golf analyst, discussed the state of golf in Austin, Texas, during an evening honoring sportscaster Verne Lundquist hosted by the Headliners Foundation. Feherty expressed his disappointment in the city losing the Dell Technologies Match Play tournament. "You know, the Austin Country Club was a tremendous host for the Dell match Matchplay for so many years. So it's kind of a shame not to see a big tournament here," he said.
When asked about the controversy surrounding LIV Golf and its impact on the PGA Tour, Feherty said the situation is still in a state of flux. "I think what we're going to see in years to come is, you know, kind of like tennis. You're playing the four majors and then play wherever you want," he said. Feherty also acknowledged the frustration of watching major tournaments without some of the best players in the field due to ongoing disputes.
He also shared his admiration for Verne Lundquist, who is entering his final Masters tournament as a broadcaster. "He's an American national treasure. And, you know, he does football, basketball, ice skating, golf, horse racing. I mean, it's absolutely amazing the career that he's had and, you know, 40 years at the Masters, something special," Feherty said.
