A newly refurbished historical marker for the Potawatomi Trail now stands in front of the Lake Station Historical Museum. The marker was unveiled on Saturday. Mayor Mike Carroll was happy about the dedication ceremony. “Anytime we can bring people together and celebrate history and culture, it’s a win,” he said.
“I didn’t learn about Native American history and the sacrifices the Native Americans made in my history classes,” she said. “After all, as a child in the ’60s and ’70s, history books were written from the settlers’ point of view and not that of the Native Americans.” Paula Book, chair of the Indiana DAR American Indians Committee, tells of Indiana’s original inhabitants during a dedication ceremony on Saturday for the newly refurbished and relocated historical marker for the Potawatomi Trail.
“For centuries, a complex web of trade routes linked the farthest corners of the continent, facilitating the exchange of foodstuffs and raw materials from the eastern seaboard to the Rocky Mountains,” Book said. “The tribes of the Indiana region, with territories spanning three of the primary waterways in the Midwest – the Ohio River, Wabash River and the Great Lakes region – played a significant role in this network.
