Dave Noumou, 8, of Toronto, right, jumps from a fence as his brother Daniel, Noumou, 6, second from right, looks on, Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, at Klyde Warren Park in Dallas.Early voting starts tomorrow in a $1.25 billion bond election that gives voters a transformative opportunity to change the future of the city of Dallas. All the investment categories are worthy, but one is unique in its power to inclusively serve all of Dallas today and reshape our city for the future.
Our parks and recreation system is what makes Dallas our Dallas. Our 182 miles of trails connect communities of every class, color and gender. On our 240 fields and playgrounds, bodies grow strong. In our 42 technology and community centers, all of Dallas learns and grows. And it needs amplifying. It’s been seven years since the 2017 bond made the last major investment in our parks, and our city has grown since then. The parks system serves growth and spurs it.
Development of these resources through this bond into local recreation centers like the planned expansion of Campbell Green Park will provide more tech centers for our youth to hone their skills for the future. With this bond, more economically transformative parks investments will occur. There will be an emphasis placed on identifying currently vacant public land and turning it into easily accessible parks destinations as was recently accomplished with the Parkhill Dog Park.Approximately $70 million would fund efforts where partners are waiting with close to $400 million in matching funds, doubling or even tripling the investment in some of our most treasured assets.
In his 2023 inaugural address, Mayor Eric Johnson described his vision for Dallas: to build the best park system of any major city in Texas. Proposition B is the key to realizing that vision and transforming public life in our city.Heavy rain brings flood advisories and warnings across Dallas-Fort Worth
