Dallas officials want to scale down new $300 million Kalita Humphreys Theater plan

The master plan to revitalize the Kalita Humphreys Theater and redevelop the surrounding park is estimated to cost more than $300 million.Some Dallas City Council members say they support restoring the Kalita Humphreys Theater but want cheaper options than aSeveral elected officials who sit on the Quality of Life, Arts and Culture Committee, said at its meeting Tuesday, said the price tag for aearlier this month gave them pause.

“We’ve had enough of these where folks come and say, ‘oh, city, put your skin in the game and we’re going to raise the rest privately,’ and then the rest doesn’t get raised,” said Narvaez, who represents West Dallas and is the council’s deputy mayor pro tem. “And so then who’s left holding the bag? The taxpayer.”

The theater on Turtle Creek Boulevard is one of the last completed works designed by Wright, who died before it opened in 1959. The building was built for the Dallas Theater Center, and the group donated it to the city in 1974. The latest Kalita Humphreys Theater master plan in addition to the $52 million for restoration work, calls for $168 million in four new buildings, courtyards, plazas, walkways, a restaurant and cafe. Another $22 million is proposed to build the infrastructure for a new 380-space underground parking garage, $10 million to build a pedestrian bridge on the grounds connecting the nearby Katy Trail and Turtle Creek, and another $56 million in other land and nearby trail improvements.

Yeah, let them have “pause” while they let the suburbs build up their tax base w pro teams, amusement parks, and international companies that ride on the “Dallas” name. But please, “pause” on investing into, ya know, ACTUAL Dallas culture with the only Frank Lloyd Wright theater
