Johnson, a former state representative who was first elected mayor in 2019, made public safety, city ethics reform, workforce development, increasing parks and green space and boosting the city’s international standing among his top priorities. Over a four-year term, he dealt with

He said he believes the city is safer, stronger and more vibrant than when he was first elected and points to strides made in addressing violent crime. Dallas police have seen yearly declines in the total number of killings the past two years. “Dallas is truly the place to be right now,” he said. “I am honored to help position our city to win the future.”

Richardson, who declared as a write-in candidate the day after the February filing deadline, reported raising no money. Johnson publicly rooted against some council incumbents during the 2021 election, throwing his support behind some challengers who ultimately lost their council seat bids. Council member Jaime Resendez, who faced a mayor-backed challenger, at the time called Johnson “the most divisive and combative political figure in city politics in a generation.” Johnson didn’t endorse in any of the City Council races this year.

“The first two years were rough, I think we all could see that. He didn’t have a stable coalition on the council and clearly had trouble getting support for some things that he wanted to pursue,” Jillson noted.
