About a dozen community and political organizations came together to march in downtown Dallas in March 2024 in protest of Senate Bill 4.that would make it clear Dallas doesn’t agree with Senate Bill 4 but would not impact the potential enforcement of it if it’s found to be constitutional and goes into effect. The council’s quality of life, arts and culture committee voted Monday to forward the document to the full City Council.
“The city of Dallas urges the state legislature to consider the concerns raised by the city and work collaboratively to find solutions that prioritize public safety and respect the diverse communities within the city of Dallas,” the document said. She said even residents who are legal citizens have been afraid to report crimes in their neighborhoods for fear the police response could lead to questionsabout their immigration status., the city police department’s Latino community outreach program. The events are meant to help build trust between the community and Spanish-speaking police officers, but some residents have told her they won’t go because officers are there.
The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans has not yet ruled on an appeal of a lower court’s decision to stop SB 4 from going into effect. The federal government and civil rights organizations sued Texas, challenging the constitutionality of SB 4. Oral arguments were heard April.
