Daily Briefing: - Republicans and Democrats concerned about Hungary's Orban ahead of U.S. visit - Theresa May’s Conservatives slump to fifth place in an opinion poll ahead of EU election - U.S. and China appear deadlocked over trade

. The latest YouGov poll released this morning shows Nigel Farage's Brexit Party on 34 percent compared with just 10% for the Conservatives, prompting senior party figures to demand she set out her departure plans this week. The flip side of the polling is that Labour, with many Remainers put off by its heavily caveated policy on a second referendum, is also shedding votes while unequivocally pro-EU parties are gaining.

Trump reiterated his view that China “broke the deal” and that the United States is “right where we want to be” with Beijing. After a fleeting bounce on Friday, Shanghai stocks and Wall Street’s S&P500 futures dropped more than 1% first thing Monday as China’s offshore yuan skidded 0.75% to its weakest levels of the year.

The yield curve between three months and 10 years has flattened to as low as two basis points – a whisker from another inversion that caused such consternation in March.Elsewhere in currency markets, the safe-haven Japanese yen remained firm and the dollar/yen exchange rate was stuck below 110. The dollar’s DXY index, euro/dollar and sterling were all steadier.
