Scientists don't know what neutron star mergers and non-repeating FRBs have in common. The authors of the new study propose that these two phenomena may be two steps in the same process.
When two neutron stars collide, they may form a rapidly spinning, even bigger neutron star that only lasts for a short time, the researchers think. That neutron star is unstable, and will soon collapse down into a— and it might create the FRB when it does so. The observation of gravitational waves, which are a clear sign of a neutron star merger, coincident with an FRB is not definitive proof that this is what's happening, but it does hint at this connection.
